Leading With Heart: Welcoming Dr. Toyia Curry to FPA – Alabama

Some journeys feel destined. For Dr. Toyia Curry, joining Freedom Prep Academy is one of them.

Born and raised in Mobile, Alabama, Dr. Curry’s story begins in the very community she now returns to serve. A proud graduate of Alabama State University and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., her life and career have long been shaped by service, leadership, and a deep belief in creating opportunities for the next generation. Stepping into the role of Head of School in Residence at Freedom Prep – Alabama is not simply professional work. It is personal.

FPA aligned naturally with Dr. Curry’s calling. The opportunity to help found a school in Alabama allows her to pour back into a place that helped shape who she is, while building a learning environment grounded in excellence, structure, and genuine care for students.

At the heart of Dr. Curry’s leadership is a simple belief: people thrive when they are supported, challenged, and truly seen. She leads with clarity, consistency, and care, creating spaces where expectations are clear and trust is a foundational element. Her approach centers coaching over compliance and honest communication over assumptions. Whether working alongside educators or supporting students, she is intentional about helping others recognize their potential and feel empowered to reach it.

Dr. Curry brings a wealth of experience to the Freedom Prep community. Her career in education spans roles across both charter and traditional public school systems, from substitute teacher and classroom educator to instructional coach, dean, and assistant head of school. Much of her professional journey unfolded in Texas, a state known for its role in education reform, where she sharpened her instructional leadership and systems-building expertise.

She also holds a doctorate in Instructional Leadership with a focus on formative assessment and improving reading outcomes. This background shapes how she leads day to day. Dr. Curry believes meaningful change happens during the process, in real time, through thoughtful coaching, actionable feedback, and systems that support growth for both educators and students.

That belief is not just something Dr. Curry brings to Freedom Prep. It is something she has experienced firsthand. One of the moments she is most proud of reflects the organization’s mission in action through the intentional investment being made in her development as a leader preparing to take on the founding Head of School role. The coaching, trust, and strategic exposure she receives are not only about her own growth, but about ensuring long-term success for students, the school, and the surrounding community.

Looking ahead, Dr. Curry is focused on building a strong foundation for the Alabama campus: academically, culturally, and operationally. Her vision includes developing confident educators, establishing clear and sustainable systems, and creating a school environment where families feel welcomed, heard, and truly valued.

At the heart of this vision is community engagement. Dr. Curry is committed to partnering closely with families, local organizations, and community leaders to ensure Freedom Prep Academy Alabama reflects and serves the community it belongs to.

We are proud to welcome Dr. Toyia Curry to the Freedom Prep family. Her story is one of purpose, preparation, and heart, and we are excited to see the impact of her leadership as Freedom Prep Academy Alabama continues to grow.
