Carrying the Torch: Celebrating 18 Years of Literacy and Liberation

At Freedom Prep, literacy means more than the ability to read. It is the key to unlocking doors, lighting paths, and planting seeds of possibility. This year, we proudly celebrated 18 remarkable years of this belief, a vision brought to life by our founder, Ms. Roblin J. Webb.

The Liberation Legacy Campaign honors Ms. Webb’s enduring belief that stories matter, and that every student deserves to see themselves reflected in the pages they read. For nearly two decades, Roblin has led Freedom Prep with courage, care, and a steady belief in the promise of our children. Through her leadership, Freedom Prep has become a place where learning is rooted in purpose and where students are encouraged not only to grow, but to rise with confidence.

That belief lives on through the stories that have shaped this community from the very beginning. Throughout the Liberation Legacy Campaign, we have celebrated 18 beloved books that reflect Roblin’s heart and vision for Freedom Prep. These stories have influenced her leadership and continue to shape the experiences of our students, reminding us that reading is not only foundational to learning, but also an act of love, liberation, and possibility.

The books in the Liberation Library series include:

  1. Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates

  2. Teaching Community: A Pedagogy of Hope by bell hooks

  3. The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson

  4. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou

  5. Beloved by Toni Morrison

  6. The Miseducation of the Negro by Carter G. Woodson

  7. Kindred by Octavia E. Butler

  8. Perfect Peace by Daniel Black

  9. They Tell Me of a Home by Daniel Black

  10. The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. Du Bois

  11. Teaching to Transgress by bell hooks

  12. The Color Purple by Alice Walker

  13. The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin

  14. The Skin I’m In by Sharon Flake

  15. Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston

  16. The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Malcolm X and Alex Haley

  17. Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe

  18. The Wake of The Wind by J. California Cooper

Through these stories, Roblin’s vision comes to life, encouraging students to connect with the past, speak with purpose, and dream boldly about their future.

That same vision is carried forward by the community that has stood with Freedom Prep from the very beginning. Thanks to the generosity of families, partners, and supporters, we are moving closer to our goal of 180 gifts, one for every day our students step into their classrooms ready to learn, grow, and embrace the power of literacy. Every contribution, whether $18, $180, or $1,800, is a promise to carry Roblin’s legacy forward and help Freedom Prep double the number of students we serve by 2030.

If these stories have moved you, inspired you, or reminded you why this work matters, we invite you to take one final step with us. Give in honor of Roblin’s leadership. Give for the students who are writing the next chapters. Help us keep this legacy alive and thriving.
