Freedom Prep Charter Schools prepare all students in grades Pre-K through 12 to excel in college and in life. With a mission to provide a high-quality, college-preparatory education, Freedom Prep is committed to helping students succeed and thrive beyond the classroom.

 

Freedom Preparatory Academy is part of one of the highest-performing charter school networks in the Memphis metro area. Notably, 100% of graduates from the first four classes have been accepted into four-year colleges and universities.

Located in the Whitehaven community, the Freedom Prep – Millbranch Campus has been recognized as a Tennessee Reward School for two consecutive years. The school offers a strong academic program that includes Spanish instruction for all students, along with engaging lessons in literature, science, and mathematics.

 

Students can also participate in a wide variety of extracurricular activities, such as the Spanish Club, cheerleading, Girl Scouts, the Student Government Association, and Healthy Kids. These programs help students grow, build leadership skills, and form lasting connections beyond the classroom.

Head of School

  • James Johnson
    James Johnson brings more than 14 years of experience in education and a deep commitment to students, families, and community. A proud military brat originally from San Diego, he planted roots in Memphis in 2007 and has since served as a teacher, assistant principal, interim principal, and now school leader. A Teach For America alumnus, Mr. Johnson holds degrees from the University of Memphis, Christian Brothers University, and Arkansas State University, and is known for building strong systems, developing educators, and driving student achievement. He leads with a CARE vision focused on Community, Academic Excellence, Relationships, and Empowering the whole child, ensuring every student feels supported, challenged, and prepared to thrive.
