Six years ago, Shabranique Williams walked into a kindergarten classroom at FPA-Memphis with a heart full of curiosity and a deep desire to make a difference. Inspired by her mother, who devoted her life to nurturing students and families in underserved communities, Ms. Williams knew early on that education was her calling. She wanted to help every child reach their full potential, and to create connections that would last far beyond the classroom walls. Today, she leads the academic journey at Freedom Prep Birmingham as the Dean of Academics, inspiring teachers and students with the same energy and heart she brought to her very first classroom. “One of the most joyous parts of my work,” she shares, “is seeing relationships grow so strong that parents begin to feel like family. Those connections create a true sense of community.”
For Ms. Williams, the first weeks of kindergarten are magical. She loves watching children adjust to routines, find their rhythm in the classroom, and discover the excitement of learning. Families are never far from the process, and she ensures parents feel informed, supported, and connected from day one.
Building strong readers and math skills is a priority at Freedom Prep. Through structured lessons, small-group instruction, and assessments, teachers tailor learning to meet each child’s needs. But the school’s approach goes beyond academics. “Our curriculum is rigorous and standards-based, but it’s also intentionally designed to foster critical thinking, student voice, and real-world connections,” explains Ms. Williams.
Beyond the classroom, students are encouraged to explore their passions. Whether through chess or math, enrichment programs spark curiosity, creativity, and a love for lifelong learning. And for those who need extra support or are learning English, Freedom Prep’s teachers, support staff, and specialists work hand-in-hand to provide individualized care. As she reflects on her journey, Shabranique emphasizes growth, not just for students, but for teachers too. “When teachers grow, our students benefit the most,” she says. And in her work at Freedom Prep Birmingham, she has seen both flourish, creating a vibrant, supportive community where learning is joyful, relationships are strong, and every child has the opportunity to thrive.
