On a chilly morning this winter, the halls at Freedom Prep felt a little warmer than usual.
Tables near the high school’s entrance were stacked high with coats of every size and color. Puffer jackets, hoodies, wool coats, tiny sleeves for little ones, longer styles for our older students. Staff sorted, students helped carry boxes, and families stopped by with quiet smiles of thanks. It looked simple on the surface. Just coats. But it meant so much more.
At Freedom Prep, we know learning is hard to focus on when basic needs are not met. As temperatures dropped, our social work team noticed what many families were already feeling. Rising costs of living and making everyday essentials harder to manage. A warm winter coat should never be a luxury.
So the team did what they have faithfully done since 2021.
Each year, Freedom Prep’s social work team organizes a coat drive to make sure students can come to school warm, comfortable, and ready to learn. What began as a simple response to a need has grown into a meaningful tradition rooted in care.
This year’s drive, that started around Thanksgiving Break going into Winter Break, focused on supporting Freedom Prep students experiencing unexpected challenges.
By providing coats directly to our students, FPA helped remove a small but real barrier to daily attendance. Less worry about the cold means more energy for the classroom. For many families, the gift was not just a coat. It was a reassurance that our school community cares.
The effort quickly became a true community project.
Students helped spread the word and learned firsthand what it looks like to serve others. Staff members donated coats, sorted sizes, and offered helping hands between meetings and classes.
Community partners showed up with generosity, adding even more warmth to the racks. Every group played a part, and together they created something special.
Some of the most meaningful moments were the quiet ones. A student trying on a coat and breaking into a grin when it fit just right, and a soft thank you. The look of relief that said everything without words. Those small acts of kindness carry a lasting impact and remind us why this work matters.
The coat drive reflects Freedom Prep’s commitment to educating the whole child and supporting the whole family. Academics are at the heart of what we do, but care comes first.
When students feel safe, warm, and supported, they can show up as their best selves. Because at Freedom Prep, we do not just see data. We see people.
If your family could use additional support or resources this season, our Freedom Prep social work team is here to help. Students and families are always welcome to reach out at socialwork@freedomprep.org.
We are committed to supporting the well-being of every student and family and ensuring everyone feels cared for.
