When former NFL defensive tackle Dan Williams walked into Freedom Prep Brownlee High this afternoon, our 9th and 10th graders knew they were in for something special. A Memphis native and former UT Vols graduate, Dan didn’t come to talk about touchdowns and tackles. He came to talk about the choices that carried him from a high school classroom all the way to the biggest stage in football.
As soon as he began to speak, the room grew quiet. Our students leaned in, listening closely as Dan took them back to where his story began, right where they sit today. He shared that his schools truly invested in him, and that investment planted a commitment to excellence that still guides him. In 9th grade, someone gave him a phrase he has carried ever since: “Trying your best, doing the best, and being the best.” It became one of the many sayings he lives by, and he took it to heart. “I was the best version of me that I could be and stayed on top of my grades,” he told our students. “I had to be responsible.”
Our FPA students listened. Nodded showing agreement.
Dan continued to share what made him more focused, more responsible in college. He remembered watching classmates scramble to take extra classes just to catch up and qualify for scholarships. Because he had built strong habits early, he was ready when his opportunity came knocking.
College brought a whole new playbook. Dan was honest about the challenge of figuring out coursework on his own, keeping up with grade requirements, and juggling it all alongside the demands of college athletics. Through every late night and tough game, he held on to the standard he had set for himself years earlier: to excel. And he never did it alone. “I really leaned on my community,” he shared, “the people around me, my former coaches, my former teachers.” With their support, Dan reached his dream of finishing college and playing in the NFL.
Before he left our FPA campus, Dan offered our Eagles one last piece of wisdom: “You’re in the 9th grade. You have the luxury to excel and do the things you want to achieve.” Our students took his words to heart, nodding along as they realized the runway is wide open and there is no better time to take flight.
Dan’s visit was about more than football. It was about living out our core values: Excellence, Integrity, Responsibility, Respect, and Community, the very values our Eagles practice every day in the halls of Freedom Prep. His story proved that the habits our students build today can carry them anywhere they dream of going tomorrow. Thank you, Dan, for investing in our students just as your schools once invested in you. Our Eagles are ready to soar!
