Every student has a story. Every journey matters.
Today, we’re excited to introduce you to Terrick Bailey, whose path from Freedom Prep to ESPN is a story of passion, perseverance, and seizing opportunities.
Terrick graduated from Freedom Prep in 2019 and has since built an exciting career in sports entertainment. After earning his bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, he now works at ESPN Headquarters as a Content Associate on the daily show NBA Today.
Growing up surrounded by sports, both on the court and in front of the TV, Terrick knew early on that he wanted to turn that passion into a career. At the University of Tennessee, he dove headfirst into the sports broadcasting network, gaining hands-on experience, building connections, and learning the craft. Those experiences paved the way to ESPN and continue to shape his career today.
Terrick often reflects on how Freedom Prep set the foundation for his success. The school instilled in him a strong work ethic, the value of perseverance, and the understanding that small, consistent efforts lead to big results. He remembers signing day as a special milestone, a celebration of hard work and the beginning of an exciting new chapter.
He also recalls the educators who poured into him along the way. Mr. Styles, Ms. Gustafson, and Ms. Swanson encouraged him to push beyond his limits and dream bigger. Lessons like the importance of self-presentation, showing up every day in a blazer and tie, may have seemed small at the time, but they taught him habits that now carry over into professional life. Like many ambitious young professionals, Terrick has faced challenges, including moments of impostor syndrome. What he learned at Freedom Prep has stayed with him. He knows that no opportunity is too big and that confidence comes from preparation and persistence.
Today, he celebrates milestones such as graduating from the University of Tennessee and stepping into a career at ESPN, the worldwide leader in sports. When recently asked, Terrick offered support and mentorship to Freedom Prep students at the snap of a finger, happily sharing his experiences and expertise. His generosity reminds us that success is sweetest when shared.
Terrick’s advice to current students is simple. Start building skills now, seek out hands-on experiences wherever you can, and do not be afraid to reach out to people doing the work you dream of. You never know what doors those connections can open.
Looking ahead, Terrick defines success by staying grounded in his faith, growing professionally, and giving back to the next generation. He hopes to pour into young people and guide them as they navigate life and their careers. Sharing his story, he wants students to see that people from similar backgrounds can dream big and make a global impact.
